Message From The President

I wish to welcome one and all to the Southern California Republican Club (SCRC)! We are the premiere Republic organization for Republicans in the Greater Los Angeles area.

Many of you feel that there aren't too many of us Republicans in Los Angeles. Actually, there are far more Republicans in Southern California than you think.

The main problem with the Republican Party is one of perception. Lies, distortions and exaggerations are what many people "know" of the Republican Party. Perception becomes reality. And a perception no matter how false still becomes a reality.

Firstly, the Republican Party has been branded as racist, sexist, mean-spirited, uncaring, intolerant, for the rich, and every other negative stereotype in the book. The Democrat Party has been more successful at defining Republicans (lies) to Los Angelenos, California and Americans as a whole than we have been at defining ourselves (the truth).

But how many know that it was the Democratic Party that started out as the pro-slavery Party in America. Even today, I would argue, it still holds that title as evidenced by their total control of every inner-city community of Blacks, Latinos and the poor. High crime, dismal public schools and inadequate infrastructure are the hallmarks of them all. As with Blacks and Latinos, women too have been reduced to 'things' by the Democrats. They claim they want women too be independent and strong but really want women to be dependent on government as the center of their life rather than family or even their own talents. As for the "only for the rich" allegation: in the 2004 presidential election, the top five donors to the Republican Party totaled $20 million. The top 5 to the Democratic Party totaled $78 million! The majority of donors to the Republican Party are average Americans giving checks of $20, $50, etc. It is the Democratic Party that has super-wealthy donors as their primary donor base. The overwhelming majority in Beverly Hills are Democrats!

Secondly, there is the perception that California is a Democratic stronghold. I often hear from fellow Republicans: "why bother with Southern California?" or "we live on the Left Coast" or "we live in liberal Los Angeles". Well if any of that were true I would be the first to say "let's just move!" But it is truly a myth. There are in fact many liberal cities, counties and states in America. But Los Angeles is not one of those cities and California is not one of those states.

Consider the following list of "controversial" statewide propositions in California:

  • 1994 Proposition 187 End state benefits to illegal immigrants.
  • 1996 Proposition 209 - End affirmative action (race-based preferences) in hiring, contracts and higher education.
  • 2000 Proposition 22 - Marriage is between one man and one woman.
  • 2000 Proposition 227 - End bilingual education in public schools.

These propositions were overwhelmingly voted for by majority of Republicans and Democrats!

Add to this the 2001 Governor's race. Conservative Republican challenger Bill Simon came within 5% of beating the liberal Democratic incumbent Governor Gray Davis!

How liberal could California really be to have its citizens vote in this manner?

Political parties serve a very important function in our democracy. Like-minded voters come together within an organization - a political party - and pool their resources of money, volunteer time and support at the ballot box to move an agenda forward. Everyone in this political party doesn't agree on every single issue. That would be impossible in a country of over 300 million Americans, a state of 33 million citizens or a city of 10 million Los Angelenos. But there are basic principles that the majority of those in the Party support. This is the "glue" that keeps the Party unified.

The leaders of the Democratic Party were vehemently opposed to all the propositions listed above that passed overwhelmingly by Democratic voters. The majority of Democrats support school choice; their leaders do not. The majority of Democrats are religious; their leaders are hostile towards people of faith. The majority of Democrats feel government programs haven't done a damn thing to solve the problems of the community; their leaders feel those programs are great successes. The majority of Democrats feel we pay too much in taxes; their leaders feel we aren't taxed enough. The majority of Democrats blame criminals and gang members for crime; their leaders blame law enforcement and poverty.

There is a simple reality here in Los Angeles, we have a majority of citizens voting Democrat when their values actually match the Republican Party.

Blaming the Democratic political machine, the liberal media, the public schools, and Hollywood is simply not a valid excuse. Yes, the Democrats and the Left are excellent at getting their propaganda out and have been doing so for the last 40 years. But we aren't a totalitarian state -- yet. We have freedom too and there is nothing stopping us from getting our message out.

The success of Democrats in tricking people who aren't really Democrats to vote Democrat isn't an indication of Democratic Party brilliance but Republican Party ineffectiveness. In American politics there are two teams. However, the Republican team isn't even on the field but stands their scratching their heads wondering why the Democratic team on the field is able to score touchdown after touchdown with such ease. I am speaking specifically of our major cities and urban centers -- the stronghold of the Democratic Party.

How on earth could 80% of Blacks be voting Democrat when it was the Democratic Party that violently supported the enslavement of Blacks, started the Ku Klux Klan, and created segregation throughout the South? How many women know that if it were not for the Republican Party that women wouldn't even have the right to vote because the Democratic Party felt women were inferior? What good is for us Republicans to have a great history - civil rights, women's rights, economic freedom, fighting evil around the world -- if no one knows about it? What good is it for us Republicans to know our principles are right if we don't bother to go into the community where we live and prove it!

Well there is a "new sheriff in town" -- SCRC. For Republicans, the organization that you've been waiting for to come into existence is here. For those Democrats who realize that the Democratic Party neither shares your values nor has done anything for our communities in decades but talk, I encourage you to do continue doing your "homework". A JFK or FDR Democrat means that you are a Republican! I am a solid conservative Republican now but I started out as a liberal Democrat. For those like-minded independents, I encourage you to make a decision and pick a Party to become a part of - you can only change things from inside the "house" sitting at the table not on the outside standing around on the sidewalk.

Join SCRC in our mission to make Los Angeles and California into a Republican majority.

We have much to do. So let's get busy!

Sincerely,

Austin Dragon
